Development
First time director Vicky Singh was to earlier direct a film titled Mera Jahaan, with Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor in leading roles, which failed to materialize. He then attempted to make a film with Kapoor alongside Deepika Padukone. After that film didn't work out, Singh decided to make a two-hero project, Roy.
Casting

Actor Ranbir Kapoor was signed on for the title role. Despite initial reports of Kapoor only featuring in a cameo appearance in the film, it was confirmed by the makers that Kapoor plays one of the two male leads in the film. Kapoor has been reported to have charged INR15 crore (US$2.3 million) for the film. The female lead was initially offered to actress Deepika Padukone, who rejected the film. Jacqueline Fernandez was later cast as a replacement, who features in a double role.Arjun Rampal was next signed on for the role of a filmmaker as the second male lead, as he was best suited for the role. According to reports, there will be one more female lead in the film, who is yet to be cast.
Filming

The shooting of the film is expected to begin in November 2013. Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal are expected to shoot for a 45 day schedule
